Dana Marie Perino (born May 9, 1972) is an American political pundit and author. From September 14, 2007 to January 20, 2009, she served as President George W. Bush’s 26th White House Press Secretary. She was the White House’s second female press secretary, following Dee Dee Myers during the Clinton Administration.

She presently works for Fox News as a political pundit and co-host of the network’s discussion show The Five. She was formerly employed by Random House as a book publishing executive. She began hosting The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino on Fox News on October 2, 2017. Perino left The Daily Briefing in early 2021 to co-anchor America’s Newsroom with Bill Hemmer.

Early Life & Career 

She was born on May 9, 1972 in Evanston, Wyoming and grew up in Denver, Colorado. Italian immigrants were two of her paternal great-grandparents. Ponderosa High School is located in Parker, a suburb southeast of Denver. Perino earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Colorado State University Pueblo, as well as majors in political science and Spanish.

She was a member of the university’s forensics team and interned at KTSC-TV, the Rocky Mountain PBS affiliate on campus. She also worked the 2 to 6 a.m. shift at KCCY-FM. Perino continued his education at the University of Illinois Springfield, earning a master’s degree in public affairs reporting (UIS). She also worked for WCIA, a CBS affiliate, as a daily reporter covering the Illinois Capitol throughout her stay at UIS.

Perino then worked in Washington, D.C. as a staff assistant for Congressman Scott McInnis (R-CO) before serving nearly four years as press secretary for Rep. Dan Schaefer (R-CO), who was then the chairman of the House Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power.

Perino and her husband Peter McMahon relocated to the United Kingdom after Schaefer announced his retirement in 1998.

Perino returned to Washington, D.C., in November 2001, and was hired as a spokesman for the Department of Justice, a position she held for two years.
