Early Life
When he was eleven years old, Arlen was diagnosed with transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Victoria quickly lost her capacity to speak, eat, walk, and move in this unusual situation. She went into a vegetative condition, from which she was regarded to be unlikely to recover. Arlen was “stuck” inside her own body for nearly four years, fully aware of what was happening but unable to move or communicate. Doctors thought there was little chance of survival and that recovery was improbable.
Arlen qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London as a member of Team USA in June 2012, following a record-breaking world performance at the 2012 Summer Paralympics US swimming trials. She won four medals in London, one gold and three silver.
Because she did not present significant proof of a persistent handicap, she was judged unable to compete in the Paralympics in 2013.

Career
Arlen made the crossover from professional athlete to sportscaster in April 2015, joining ESPN as one of the company’s youngest on-air talents.
She had learned to walk by April 2016 after being paralyzed from the waist down for over a decade. She reported having no sensation in her legs in 2017.
Arlen replaced Laurie Hernandez as a co-host of American Ninja Warrior Junior for its second season in 2020, as the latter trained for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were postponed to 2021. She is one of Sports Nation’s co-hosts (TV Show).
